The Mexican national team has finalized its plans for the 2026 World Cup with several warm-up matches, which were officially announced on Tuesday. These preparatory games are aimed at helping the team fine-tune their performance ahead of the global tournament, set to kick off in June. The team will face Ghana, Australia, and Serbia in the weeks leading up to the competition.

Warm-Up Matches Ahead of the World Cup

Mexico's World Cup preparations will begin with a match against Ghana on May 22, to be held at home in Mexico. The team will then travel to Pasadena, California, for a game against Australia on May 30 at the Rose Bowl, one of the most iconic stadiums in the United States. The final warm-up match will take place on June 4 in Mexico, with a showdown against Serbia, although the venue for this game has yet to be determined.

These matches are designed to give Mexico’s coach and players the opportunity to assess their readiness before the highly anticipated World Cup. "These are the ideal opponents to help prepare the national team for the World Cup," commented Ivar Sisniega, president of the Mexican Football Federation. The games against such competitive teams are seen as crucial to ensuring Mexico enters the tournament with confidence.

Additional Friendlies to Fine-Tune Squad

Before these matches, Mexico will play two more friendlies earlier in the year. On February 25, the team will face Iceland in Querétaro, followed by a match against Portugal in Mexico City on March 28. The game against Portugal will also mark the reopening of the Azteca Stadium, which has been closed for renovations since May 2024. Mexico will then travel to Chicago to face Belgium on March 31.

The Portugal match will be an especially significant occasion, as it will be the first game at Azteca Stadium after its extensive refurbishments. "We’ve been told that the stadium will be ready, that the pitch will be in good condition, and that the stands and spaces for the match will be ready," said Sisniega. He emphasized that the game will go ahead as scheduled on March 28 with no alternative plans in place, underscoring the importance of the event.

World Cup Opening Match Against South Africa

The 2026 World Cup will kick off for Mexico on June 11, when they face South Africa in the tournament’s opening match at the famed Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. This game marks the beginning of Mexico's journey in the 2026 World Cup, and the team is determined to be fully prepared after a rigorous series of friendlies. As the World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on the Mexican national team to see how they perform in these final preparations.

These warm-up games against tough opponents are not just about testing Mexico’s strategy and team dynamics—they are also an opportunity for the players to build momentum ahead of the tournament’s opening match. As Mexico continues to prepare for the World Cup, the excitement surrounding their campaign grows stronger.
