Manchester United are reportedly considering a summer move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. The Red Devils could activate the £60 million release clause in the England international’s contract, which he signed following a transfer saga involving Tottenham Hotspur.

Fernandes’ Future at United Remains Uncertain

Bruno Fernandes has been one of United’s standout performers since his arrival in 2020, but his long-term future at Old Trafford is uncertain. The 31-year-old has contributed significantly, winning an FA Cup and a Carabao Cup, yet speculation continues about a summer exit. Links to the Saudi Pro League and Real Madrid have circulated, though a move to Madrid has recently been dismissed.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has been suggested as a potential Fernandes replacement. Former United striker Louis Saha praised Palmer’s versatility, stating:

"It would be incredibly exciting to see Cole Palmer at Manchester United. He can play almost anywhere in attack and has proven his reliability in Chelsea’s setup. If Bruno Fernandes leaves, Palmer would be the perfect replacement, bringing youth, energy, and confidence to Old Trafford."

Gibbs-White Considered as a Viable Option

According to the Daily Mail, United have joined several Premier League rivals in monitoring Gibbs-White, though the club is cautious about adhering to a new wage structure. Recent summer signings such as Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko reportedly signed contracts around £150,000 per week, which is likely the expected range for Gibbs-White if he makes the move.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2024-25 season, helping Forest qualify for the Europa League under former manager Nuno Espirito Santo. He scored seven goals and registered eight assists in 34 Premier League appearances. This season, Gibbs-White has already netted six league goals and opened his European account with goals in Forest’s recent win over Fenerbahce.

Meanwhile, Fernandes is at risk of recording his lowest season goal tally at United. He needs four more goals to match his ten-goal total from the 2021-22 season, when the club transitioned from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Ralf Rangnick.

United Look to Reduce Wage Bill

Reducing the wage bill will be a key focus for Manchester United this summer. Midfielder Casemiro will depart at season’s end, while the club hopes Barcelona will make Marcus Rashford’s loan move permanent.

Jadon Sancho, reportedly earning around £250,000 per week, will also leave when his contract expires. Harry Maguire may be asked to accept a pay cut to remain at Old Trafford.

Gibbs-White Expected to Attract Multiple Clubs

United are not alone in pursuing Gibbs-White. If Forest face relegation, his availability could spark interest from several top-flight clubs. Tottenham came close to signing him last summer before a new contract at the City Ground halted negotiations.

Local rivals Manchester City are also reportedly interested and could offer higher wages to lure him to the Etihad Stadium.
