Marcus Rashford’s future continues to dominate headlines amid reports that Barcelona are keen to retain the Manchester United loanee but are reluctant to meet the €30 million purchase option in his loan deal.
La Liga expert Guillem Balague offered insight into Barcelona’s strategy, suggesting the club might buy Rashford and later sell him at a higher value.
“It started as a loan because they couldn’t afford the fee upfront, but £30m was considered reasonable if he performed as expected,” Balague told the Manchester Evening News.
“Financially, they hoped the situation would allow them to proceed without complications. Deco spoke with contacts at Aston Villa and Manchester United, and both were surprised that United allowed him to leave for just £30m at age 27.
“They saw an opportunity in the market. There were two options: if he impressed, they could buy him outright. Alternatively, they could acquire him and later sell him in the Premier League, where his market value is high. But Rashford’s intention was always to stay. The club had not made a final decision until recently.”
Balague added that Barcelona now want to keep the forward, but the purchase option remains a sticking point. Manchester United have remained firm on the fee, leaving Rashford’s summer destination uncertain.
