The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final will be remembered for its drama, controversy, and unrest, leaving a lasting mark on African football. From fan clashes to players walking off the pitch, the climactic match between Senegal and Morocco sparked widespread attention. Following the chaos, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a series of fines and suspensions targeting both teams, their players, and officials.
Senegal Faces Major Sanctions
Senegal, the eventual winners of the final, received the heaviest penalties from CAF. The trouble started when some players walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Senegal manager Pape Thiaw was handed a five-game ban and fined $100,000 for leading the protest and for “unsporting conduct.”
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) also faced financial penalties totaling $615,000. This includes $300,000 for improper conduct by supporters who clashed with police, another $300,000 for the conduct of players and staff, and an additional $15,000 fine for five players receiving cautions during the match. Key players Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr were also suspended for two CAF games for their behavior towards the match officials.
It is important to note that these bans apply only to CAF competitions and do not affect World Cup eligibility, which is governed by FIFA.
Morocco Also Penalized
While Senegal bore the brunt of the sanctions, Morocco was not spared. Captain Achraf Hakimi received a two-game CAF suspension, with one game suspended for a year, due to unsporting behavior during the final. Teammate Ismael Saibari was banned for three official CAF matches and fined $100,000.
The Moroccan Football Federation was fined a total of $315,000. Penalties were issued for player and staff behavior, fan interference using lasers, and even misconduct from ball boys, who were seen trying to remove the Senegalese goalkeeper’s hand towel during play.

A Controversial Finale to a Brilliant Tournament
The sanctions mark the end of an unforgettable AFCON tournament, which combined thrilling football with moments of controversy. While Senegal celebrated their hard-fought victory, the chaotic final left lingering questions about discipline and sportsmanship in African football. CAF’s penalties underscore the governing body’s commitment to maintaining order and respect, ensuring that such incidents are addressed for future tournaments.
Despite the fallout, the tournament will be remembered for the incredible performances on the pitch, even as the final moments continue to spark debate across the continent.
