Controversial football broadcaster Richard Keys has issued his first public comments since it was confirmed he will be leaving beIN SPORTS. Keys has worked alongside Andy Gray for the Qatar-based network since 2013.
The English pair are now set to return to the UK at the end of the current Premier League season when their contracts expire. Both previously departed British television under a cloud of controversy after Gray was dismissed by Sky Sports in 2011 over sexist remarks, with Keys stepping down shortly afterwards.
Prior to that episode, they had been the channel’s main presenter and lead pundit for top-flight English football coverage since its rebrand in 1992. They are expected to leave before the 2026 World Cup, with beIN believed to be planning a refresh of its on-air team.
Richard Keys Issues First Statement on Alleged ‘Fall Out’

Although The Athletic initially reported that their departure was on friendly terms, speculation has continued about a possible disagreement behind the scenes. In his weekly blog, Keys dismissed those claims, writing:
“There has been no disagreement between myself and beINSPORTS. I have enjoyed every moment of my time in Qatar — a country that means so much to me. I feel a real affection for it, but now it is time for a new chapter. I am not retiring — just changing direction. There is still plenty more ahead.”
Despite suggesting that more opportunities lie ahead, it remains unclear whether either man will be welcomed back into British television following the events of 2011. However, the 68-year-old insists that full retirement is not on his agenda.
Keys and Gray were given a second chance in the Middle East 13 years ago after being sidelined by Sky Sports due to their own actions. One of the highlights of their spell in Qatar was their coverage of the 2022 World Cup.

Keys ‘Set to Return to the UK’ After beIN Departure
Keys has been maintaining a long-distance marriage with his 37-year-old wife, Lucie Rose. The couple married in secret in 2023, and according to The Telegraph, the presenter now plans to relocate permanently to the UK to live with her following his exit from beIN SPORTS.
Meanwhile, his long-time colleague Gray is also expected to return to Britain once his contract in Qatar concludes. It is not yet known whether Gray intends to continue working in football broadcasting or if he will opt for retirement after decades in the role of pundit and commentator.
