A recent survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) has revealed that a significant majority of Premier League fans are opposed to the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). With nearly 8,000 supporters providing their insights, the data highlights widespread dissatisfaction with how VAR is integrated into the game, indicating a strong desire for change among the fanbase.

Key Findings from the Survey

The survey's results are quite revealing, showcasing that a staggering 75% of fans do not support the implementation of VAR in the Premier League. Among the respondents, 90% believe that VAR has not enhanced the matchday experience, while 91% feel that it has disrupted the natural excitement of goal celebrations. Furthermore, 94% of those surveyed stated that VAR has made watching football less enjoyable on television. Thomas Concannon, the FSA's Premier League network manager, emphasized the overwhelming desire among fans for the removal of VAR, citing frustrations over its impact on the game’s spontaneity and enjoyment.

Concannon remarked, “We’ve all lived with VAR for so long now that we’ve seen the negative impact it’s had on the game… People are annoyed about the time that it takes, annoyed about the accuracy, and annoyed about the [reduced] spontaneity.” The Premier League acknowledged the concerns raised, indicating a commitment to minimize VAR's disruption to the supporter experience. However, they also highlighted that prior research suggests fans generally favor retaining VAR, albeit with improvements in its application.

Fan Concerns About VAR

The dissatisfaction expressed in the survey extends beyond just the enjoyment of football. A notable 72% of fans believe that VAR has not improved the accuracy of refereeing decisions, while 74% feel that the rationale behind VAR decisions is often unclear. Additionally, 86% of fans are apprehensive about the potential expansion of VAR's role in the game. Many supporters are against using VAR for checking corner awards (72%) and verifying second yellow cards (52%), indicating a desire for a more streamlined and less intrusive officiating process.

Concannon also pointed out that despite the technology intended to enhance decision-making, discussions around refereeing have intensified, showcasing a paradox where VAR is supposed to clarify but often complicates the viewer's experience. He noted the frustration fans feel when goals are disallowed for marginal offside calls, questioning whether the benefits of VAR justify the ongoing controversies and delays it introduces to matches.

The Future of VAR in the Premier League

While the survey results indicate robust opposition to VAR among supporters, the likelihood of its removal remains low. In 2024, 19 out of 20 Premier League clubs voted to maintain VAR, with only Wolves dissenting after calling for the poll themselves. To abolish VAR, a proposal must receive support from 14 of the 20 clubs, making significant changes unlikely under the current circumstances.

Despite arguments in favor of VAR, including claims of a 96-97% accuracy rate for officiating decisions since its introduction, the sentiment among fans suggests a growing disconnect between the league's administration and its supporters. The Premier League counters that VAR has led to approximately 100 correct overturns per season, which prevents incorrect goals and ensures proper penalties and red card decisions. However, the FSA insists that the voices of fans should be heard and that their concerns warrant serious consideration.

Concannon concluded, “Supporters naturally raise their concerns and they fall on deaf ears far too much… Don’t just ignore what supporters are telling you in great numbers—that the enjoyment of football isn’t there anymore in comparison to what it used to be.” This call to action emphasizes the need for the Premier League to engage more meaningfully with its fanbase to ensure the sport remains enjoyable and accessible to all.
