Tottenham’s new head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has issued a public apology to fans following controversial remarks about Mason Greenwood. The Italian manager, who previously signed and coached Greenwood at Marseille, faced criticism from some supporter groups over his comments regarding the former Manchester United striker. De Zerbi emphasized that he never intended to downplay issues of violence or harm and expressed his commitment to supporting those most at risk.
De Zerbi Addresses Controversy Over Greenwood
De Zerbi’s statements, made in November, sparked backlash among Tottenham fans, with critics accusing him of downplaying Greenwood’s past allegations. Greenwood, who faced serious charges in 2022, saw those charges dropped in 2023 due to a lack of realistic prospect for conviction. De Zerbi clarified that his comments were intended to highlight Greenwood’s personal growth rather than justify his past.
He stated, “I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women, or violence against anyone more broadly. I’ve consistently fought and taken a stand to be on the side of those who are most at risk.” De Zerbi also emphasized his sensitivity to such issues, noting that he has a daughter and has always been careful in how he addresses delicate matters.
Greenwood’s Career and Move to Marseille
Mason Greenwood, once considered one of England’s brightest football talents, moved from Manchester United after his legal case concluded. He initially joined Getafe on loan before signing with Marseille in July 2024 for a reported fee of up to £26.6 million. At 24, Greenwood has thrived at Marseille, scoring 47 goals in 74 appearances and sharing the Ligue 1 top scorer title with PSG’s Ousmane Dembele last season.
Despite his on-field success, De Zerbi’s comments about Greenwood’s personal life and character—describing him as someone who has “paid in a strong way for what happened”—were met with criticism. Fan groups called the remarks “unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive.”

While the controversy lingers, De Zerbi’s primary goal is to stabilize Tottenham in the Premier League. Appointed after interim coach Igor Tudor was dismissed with Spurs just one point above the relegation zone, De Zerbi faces the immediate challenge of reversing the team’s winless streak dating back to late December.
Speaking about his long-term commitment, De Zerbi said, “I signed five years of contract because, for me, it is a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season, no matter what. Tottenham, especially in this moment, is maybe the most important challenge in my career—I'm ready to start this challenge.” He added that he believes in the squad’s quality and intends to rebuild confidence while focusing on the players’ strengths to navigate a difficult period.
