Football world mourns the loss of Mircea Lucescu, the esteemed Romanian coach whose career spanned six decades. Lucescu passed away at the age of 80 after suffering a heart arrhythmia that led to a cardiac arrest. His death was officially confirmed by the Bucharest University Hospital on Tuesday, leaving fans and clubs alike paying their respects to one of football’s most influential figures.
Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Mircea Lucescu began his managerial journey as a player-coach at Cornivul Hunedoara in 1979, quickly making a mark in Romanian football. Between 1981 and 1986, he served as the head coach of the Romanian national team, establishing his reputation as a tactical mastermind. He then took charge of Dinamo Bucuresti for five years before venturing into Italian football, where he would go on to manage several clubs including Pisa and Inter Milan.
Italian Club Career: Pisa, Brescia, Reggiana, and Inter

Lucescu’s time in Italy included a one-year stint with Pisa during the 1990–91 Serie A season. Despite the brevity of his tenure, his leadership left a lasting impression, as Pisa started the season strongly under his guidance. Following Pisa, he had two separate spells with Brescia between 1991 and 1996, and later managed Reggiana before taking charge of Inter Milan in 1998–99. His contributions to Italian football remain fondly remembered by supporters.
International Success and Lasting Legacy

Beyond Italy, Lucescu enjoyed a distinguished international coaching career. He led clubs like Rapid Bucuresti, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Dynamo Kyiv, as well as the national teams of Turkey and Romania. Remarkably, he is one of only nine managers to have overseen 100 or more Champions League matches, totaling 115 appearances alongside legends such as Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, and Sir Alex Ferguson. His tactical brilliance and longevity cemented his status as a football icon.
