Wales football legend Jess Fishlock has officially confirmed that she will retire at the conclusion of the current National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) season, as announced by her club, Seattle Reign. The 39-year-old midfielder, who had previously called time on her international career in October, signed a one-year extension with the Reign shortly thereafter, allowing her to continue playing for one final season.

A Storied Career with Seattle Reign

Fishlock's departure marks the end of a remarkable journey with Seattle Reign, a club she has been part of since its inaugural season in 2013. Notably, Fishlock is the only player who remains from the club's original squad, having accumulated 219 NWSL appearances over the years. During her tenure, she helped lead the team to three NWSL Shields and three NWSL Championship appearances, earning the league's MVP title in 2021. Fishlock's enduring presence at the club has made her one of the most iconic figures in NWSL history.

A Last Season of Dedication and Gratitude

Reflecting on her long and illustrious career, Fishlock shared an emotional message with fans, saying, "It’s hard to put into words what Seattle and this club mean to me. This is where I've grown, where I've fought, where I've experienced some of the best moments of my career." She expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support she has received from her teammates, the fans, and the city of Seattle. As her final season comes to an end, Fishlock is determined to give her all in the remaining games and make her last season a memorable one.

Legacy Beyond Seattle Reign

In addition to her club success, Fishlock has had an incredible impact on the Wales national team. She is the record appearance maker and all-time top scorer for her country, having netted 48 goals in 166 international matches. Fishlock's international career saw her become a cornerstone of Welsh football, and she continues to be involved with the national team, taking on a coaching role for Wales' Women's World Cup qualifier against Czech Republic in March. While her focus remains on her playing career for now, Fishlock's influence extends far beyond the pitch.

As Fishlock prepares to hang up her boots, both the NWSL and Welsh football will undoubtedly feel the absence of one of their most influential and accomplished players.
