Gianluca Rocchi, the head of Italy's top-flight referees, has taken the decision to suspend himself following reports of an investigation into alleged involvement in sporting fraud. The investigation, conducted by the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office, has placed Rocchi under scrutiny for actions during the 2024-25 Serie A season.

Investigation and Allegations

According to the AGI news agency, Rocchi, a former international referee, is facing charges of “complicity in sporting fraud.” The investigation stems from the alleged selection of a referee who had close ties with Inter Milan. In another controversial incident, Rocchi is accused of influencing a video assistant referee (VAR) official during a match between Udinese and Parma in March of the previous year. It is claimed that despite an initial decision not to award a penalty, Rocchi pressured the VAR official to advise the on-field referee to review a possible handball situation, which led to the awarding of a penalty that helped Udinese secure a 1-0 victory.

Response from Rocchi and the Italian Referees Association

In his statement, Rocchi expressed regret over the suspension but insisted that it was necessary to allow the judicial process to run its course. He stressed that he hoped to emerge from the situation stronger and clarified that his actions were solely intended to protect the integrity of Italian football. Along with Rocchi, Andrea Gervasoni, the VAR supervisor for Serie A and Serie B, has also stepped down as he faces investigation.

"I have always acted out of love for my role and respect for the athletes, and I will continue to work towards resolving this matter quickly," said Rocchi.

Impact of Allegations on Italian Football

These allegations have raised significant concerns within Italian football, as they cast doubt on the integrity of match officiating in Serie A and Serie B. The ongoing investigation into Rocchi's actions comes at a time when the role of referees and VAR in modern football is under intense scrutiny.

If found guilty of sporting fraud, Rocchi could face serious legal consequences, as the offense carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison under Italian law.
