Anthony Gordon nearly joined Liverpool two years ago, but a new transfer battle could develop this summer with Arsenal now entering the picture.
Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Newcastle United star Gordon ahead of the new season. The attacker is also admired by Manchester United and Liverpool, but Arsenal are believed to have moved ahead of their rivals and feel the player would welcome a switch to London.
The England international was close to a move to Liverpool in 2024. At that time, Newcastle were unwilling to sell for less than £100 million, but Arsenal are now thought to be targeting a deal closer to £75m.
According to The Sun, Arsenal intend to pursue the 25-year-old this summer despite competition from Liverpool and United. Manager Mikel Arteta has long admired Gordon, with interest first surfacing earlier this year.
Arsenal are now said to be ahead in the race and believe Gordon would be open to relocating to north London.
With two years left on his contract, Newcastle are keen to retain him, but sources suggest they could consider negotiations if the right bid arrives. Despite Gordon’s Premier League and international experience, Arsenal are reportedly hoping to secure him for around £75–80m.
Gordon, however, played down speculation last week and stated he is content at Newcastle. When asked about rumours of becoming the next high-profile departure from Tyneside, he told Chronicle Live: “About me? I haven’t seen them. What are they saying?”
When informed that Arsenal and Liverpool had been linked with him, Gordon replied: “It’s the same old story. They just pick names out of a hat. I haven’t heard anything – maybe they should tell me before they tell you.”

He added: “My focus is on myself and the team, and on what’s happening right now.
“If you think too far ahead, you start to underperform. I’ve done that before and I won’t do it again.”
The report claims Arsenal want to reinforce their left flank, which could place Gabriel Martinelli’s long-term future under scrutiny. The Brazilian has rotated in and out of the side this season and has registered just three Premier League goal contributions so far.
Beyond Gordon’s pace and scoring threat, Arteta is said to value his adaptability, with Eddie Howe having used him as a central striker on several occasions this campaign.
Arsenal spent more than £250 million on eight first-team players last summer but remain well positioned to invest again after strong runs in the Champions League and domestic cup competitions.
The Gunners currently sit at the top of the Premier League and are aiming to lift the title for the first time since 2004. They hold a five-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand, with the title race expected to go down to the final weeks of the season.
