Tottenham could target a new left-back despite adding teenage talent Souza during the winter transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be active in the summer market as they look to fix key weaknesses following a difficult domestic campaign.
The defensive line, in particular, needs reinforcement. Spurs signed teenage left-back Souza in January to provide backup for Destiny Udogie. Persistent thigh injuries have hindered Udogie’s development over the past two seasons, and the Italian has endured another campaign disrupted by injury, missing multiple games.
Udogie is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue sustained during Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United earlier this month. Concerns over his fitness may leave Spurs considering whether he should remain their first-choice left-back. Consequently, the club appears ready to add another left-back this summer.
Tottenham could compete with Newcastle for Wolves defender
According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham may face competition from Newcastle United in the race to sign Wolves left-back Hugo Bueno.
Wolves are on the brink of relegation, having accumulated only 13 points from 29 matches. With nine games remaining, survival in the Premier League is extremely unlikely. Following relegation, several players, including Hugo Bueno, are expected to depart.
Bueno has been a standout performer for Wolves this season, contributing one goal and one assist in 26 Premier League appearances. His goal against league leaders Arsenal was a stunning strike, helping Wolves come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. Following Rayan Ait-Nouri’s move to Manchester City, Bueno has become Wolves’ first-choice left wing-back. Contracted until 2028, the Spaniard would likely command a significant fee, though Wolves’ probable relegation could force a more realistic valuation.
Newcastle see Bueno as a way to strengthen their left-back options and provide competition for Lewis Hall, who has impressed this season. The Spaniard offers Premier League experience and continuity, making him an attractive target for the Magpies.
For Tottenham, signing Bueno makes strategic sense. At 23, he has his best years ahead and would provide reliable cover for the injury-prone Udogie. Bringing in the Wolves defender would also allow Spurs to loan Souza next season, giving him valuable European experience to aid his development.
It will be intriguing to see whether Tottenham raise their bid and challenge Newcastle for Hugo Bueno’s signature this summer.
