In a bold move to uphold the integrity of Major League Soccer (MLS), the league has announced lifetime bans for players Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah after an investigation revealed their involvement in betting on soccer games, including wagers on matches they participated in. The punishment comes as part of MLS's ongoing efforts to ensure that its competitions remain fair and untainted by corruption.

Investigation Reveals Extensive Gambling Activity

Both players were placed on administrative leave in October as MLS began investigating potential violations of league rules. According to the league, the investigation found that Jones and Yeboah had been engaged in significant gambling activities on soccer matches, including wagers involving their own teams, during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

One of the most concerning instances involved a bet placed on Jones to receive a yellow card in a 2024 match, which he did. At the time, both players were part of the Columbus Crew. The severity of the violation was underscored by the fact that these bets were not just placed on random matches but involved direct involvement in their own performances, calling into question the integrity of the games.

MLS Reaffirms Commitment to Integrity and Fair Play

MLS Commissioner Don Garber issued a statement reaffirming the league's commitment to maintaining the integrity of its matches. “Major League Soccer remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity,” said Garber. “The League will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”

The league has vowed to further strengthen its policies surrounding gambling, particularly focusing on eliminating betting on yellow cards, which is a growing issue in many sports. The league's response is part of a larger initiative to prevent any form of manipulation that could affect the outcome of matches or undermine fans' trust in the competition.

Team and League Reactions

The Columbus Crew, where both Jones and Yeboah played during the investigation, expressed strong disapproval of the players’ actions. The team stated, “The Columbus Crew are proud of the reputation we've established in MLS and global soccer, which is rooted in respect and integrity throughout our organization.” The Crew further emphasized that any behavior contradicting the principles of fair play is completely unacceptable.

Jones, 29, had an extensive career with multiple MLS teams, including Philadelphia Union, Nashville, Houston, and Charlotte before joining the Crew in 2024. Yeboah, 28, played for the Crew from 2022-2024 and recently moved to play for Qingdao Hainiu in China. Despite their past achievements, the seriousness of their violations led to their permanent exclusion from the league.
