Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has been ruled out of the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Galatasaray due to a minor injury. The 33-year-old Brazilian sustained the issue during a training session just before the team traveled to Turkey for the match at RAMS Park. While Liverpool have not disclosed the exact nature of the injury, manager Arne Slot remains optimistic about Alisson’s availability for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Tottenham.
Injury Forces Alisson to Miss Champions League First Leg
Alisson was present in training but felt discomfort toward the end of the session, prompting a decision with the medical team that it was not safe for him to travel to Istanbul. Speaking at a press conference, Slot explained:
“Ali, of course, was in the session as many people could see, but unfortunately he felt something towards the end of the session. People looked at it and we decided, and he decided together, that it wasn't good enough to play tomorrow. And then it's of no use travelling.”
Despite missing the Champions League clash, Slot reassured fans that Alisson’s absence is unlikely to be long-term, describing the injury as minor.
Potential Return Against Tottenham
Liverpool’s manager remained hopeful about Alisson’s participation in their Premier League fixture against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday. Slot stated:
“There's definitely a chance, yes, because we don't expect it to be a big thing. But it was too much to be available for tomorrow.”
Alisson has already missed nine matches this season due to injury, making his fitness a key concern for Liverpool as they navigate both domestic and European competitions.
Backup Goalkeeper Set to Step Up
With Alisson sidelined, Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to make his first appearance for Liverpool since the FA Cup win over Barnsley on January 12. Mamardashvili has played 11 times in all competitions this season and will provide a reliable option between the sticks against Galatasaray.
Liverpool will also be missing Italian forward Federico Chiesa, who did not travel to Istanbul due to illness, further challenging the squad as they aim to progress in Europe.
