Gian Piero Gasperini has shared his insights following AS Roma's dramatic exit from the Europa League at the hands of Bologna, where he noted that the match revealed both the team's strengths and weaknesses. With a blend of excitement and disappointment, Gasperini highlighted the challenges faced due to a lack of alternatives in the squad.
A Rollercoaster Match
In an unforgettable encounter, Roma found themselves constantly on the back foot, having drawn the first leg 1-1 before facing a 3-1 deficit in the second leg. The resilience shown by the Giallorossi was commendable, as they rallied to equalize through goals from Evan Ndicka, Donyell Malen, and Lorenzo Pellegrini, forcing the match into extra time. Unfortunately for Roma fans, it was Bologna's Nicolò Cambiaghi who sealed the game with a stunning finish, resulting in a 4-3 victory on the night and a 5-4 win on aggregate.

“It was certainly a fascinating match,” Gasperini remarked to Sky Sport Italia. “Naturally, we leave it with great regret, because we saw ourselves at our best and our worst tonight. While we played well for most of the game, the defensive lapses led to goals that put us immediately on the back foot.”
Defensive Errors and Missed Opportunities
Gasperini did not shy away from addressing the defensive errors that allowed Bologna to take a commanding lead early in the match. Despite Roma's strong attacking play, mistakes in defense proved costly. He specifically mentioned Gianluca Mancini’s reaction after being tugged on the shirt during the build-up to Bologna's opening goal, emphasizing that such moments reveal naivety on the pitch. “Mancini stayed down after a shirt tug, so Rowe was free to go forward. It was an anomalous situation, but unfortunately, we were naïve,” he explained.

Currently enduring a challenging phase, Roma finds themselves without a win in five consecutive matches, slipping from fourth to sixth in the Serie A standings. Gasperini acknowledged the increasing pressure and fatigue as the season progresses, stating, “When you reach this stage of the season, the levels go up, so does the pressure, and the fatigue makes itself felt too.”
Injury Concerns and Limited Options
The match was further complicated by injuries, with Manu Koné leaving the field early on. Gasperini noted that he only made two substitutions during regular time out of a possible six, emphasizing the constraints posed by the lack of viable options. With key players like Paulo Dybala and others sidelined, the team struggled to maintain fresh legs against Bologna's substitutes.

“In extra time, there was some fatigue, but we couldn’t make changes. Bologna brought on three fresh strikers, which made it tough for us,” Gasperini said. He voiced concerns about missing several players from the same attacking section, stating, “Clearly, if you are missing four or five players all in the same section of the squad, you will suffer in the long run.”
Despite these challenges, Gasperini was optimistic about new signing Donyell Malen, who has added a new dimension to their attacking play. “We have brought in an extraordinary Malen who has made our attacks a lot more dangerous. However, the lack of attacking options is something we’ve been carrying since the start of the season,” he noted.
Future Aspirations and Player Development
Gasperini, who previously lifted the Europa League trophy with Atalanta, described the transition to Roma as complex, particularly regarding squad formation and player acquisitions. He expressed a desire to recreate successful attacking strategies but acknowledged that injuries and missed signings have hindered that vision.

“Despite the obstacles, my players have always put in so much effort, including tonight. I cannot complain too much about their performance,” he stated, highlighting that new additions like Robinio Vaz show promise despite their youth and inexperience. “He needs time to grow, but has vivacity and strength. To aim higher, however, we need players with more experience and pedigree.”
As Roma looks to rebound from this setback, Gasperini remains hopeful while acknowledging the need for improvements moving forward.
