Sunderland Denounces Racist Abuse Directed at Brobbey

Football News April 14 , 2026 11:41:14 AM

Sunderland Football Club has strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at forward Brian Brobbey on social media, following his team's 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham. This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing and deeply concerning issue of racial discrimination in football, both online and within stadiums.

Sunderland's Response to Abuse

Sunderland has taken swift action by reporting the incident to the Premier League, social media platforms, and the police. The club has expressed its firm stance against racism, stating that it expects prompt action to be taken against those responsible. This case is unfortunately not an isolated one, as other Premier League players, including Sunderland's own Romaine Mundle, have also been victims of online abuse this season.

The club issued a statement that read: "We stand firmly with Brian and offer him our full and unwavering support. This is not an isolated incident. Recent abuse directed at Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida highlights the ongoing and unacceptable frequency of this behaviour, both inside stadiums and online."

Premier League's Stance on Discrimination

In response to the growing problem of online racial abuse, the Premier League condemned the actions, emphasizing their commitment to eradicating discrimination from the game. The league assured that it would work closely with clubs, law enforcement, and social media companies to address the issue. The Premier League also made it clear that those found guilty of such discriminatory actions would face severe consequences, including possible prison sentences, football banning orders, and permanent criminal records.

"We are disgusted by the ongoing discrimination players are facing on social media and are committed to working with clubs, authorities, law enforcement and social media companies to address this issue," a Premier League spokesperson stated.

Ongoing Issue of Racism in Football

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as reports of online abuse are at record levels. Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out has highlighted a 33% increase in the number of online abuse reports this season, with incidents of racial discrimination continuing to escalate. The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) has seen a staggering 115% rise in the number of reports this year alone.

The abuse of Brobbey, along with other high-profile cases this season, underscores the persistent issue of racism within football. The authorities are working hard to investigate these cases, with the UKFPU actively looking into the February abuse that affected several players, including Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri and Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana.

This situation highlights the need for continued efforts in eradicating racial discrimination from football and society as a whole. The collective response from Sunderland, the Premier League, and law enforcement signals a united front against racism, but there is still much work to be done to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all players and fans.
